September marks the commencement of our 2018/19 Season – our 34th (which I can hardly believe).
We open it with ‘Casablanca – The Musical!’ – our very own spoof version of the Warner Bros. 1942 wartime epic starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.
Our script – traditionally blamed on ‘Magnolia Thunderpussy’, our Director’s long-suffering assistant – follows the plot of the movie, which itself was based on a Stage Play entitled, ‘Everybody Comes To Ricks’s’.
In traditional Workshop style, a few characters have been added, largely to absorb the energies of our young members thereby removing them ‘from t’streets’, as my late mother used to say ….
… or from their catatonic condition having been glued to their computer screen since the commencement of the Summer holidays.
Explaining the story-line to our Cast prior to rehearsal I emphasised that it was essentially a love story but one heavily infused with U.S. military bravado due to the current transatlantic politics. More than two years had elapsed since WWII had begun between western allies and Nazi Germany in September 1939, but practical involvement by the U.S. didn’t begin until December 1941.
Almost overnight, the U.S. marines began to arrive – notoriously ‘over-paid, over-sexed and over-here’ – and, we were told, victory was assured….
Much of the comedy in our version is brought to life thanks to the revised lyrics courtesy of my friend, Ian Harris, plus the incredible skill of our Musical Director, Daniel Bath, who really can find a voice in everyone.
We look forward to welcoming you.
